Hooray!

3 min read
So I'm still in a bit of a haze of disbelief about my Drawing Clothing Tutorial being a Daily Deviation yesterday.

I kind of woke with a groan yesterday morning and immediately thought about going back to sleep (it was Sunday, after all.) But I saw it was 6:27AM, three minutes before I usually get up, so I said, argh, I'll just stay awake. Might as well look at the Internet for a few minutes, as usual. Ho-hum. I happened to check my DA messages before I usually do and saw 149 up by my user name. Wtf, a lot of cat pictures maybe?  Then I'm scrolling down and see the comments and it dawns on me... I have a Daily Deviation. I HAVE A DAILY DEVIATION.

I don't know if there's any member here who doesn't have little fantasies about that moment. I've been hanging around posting artz for about 6 years now (I had a couple little accounts before this one) and always wondered WHAT and IF and HOW and WHEN and MAYBE. And sometimes those questions drive us to put a little more polish on our work, to care a little more. But at the same time, you never expect it to actually happen. I was absolutely overcome with a ridiculous amount of emotion and sat there in my pajamas weeping at my iPad for about 5 minutes or so until my fingers got too cold.

So THANK YOU DeviantArt, for touching my little corner of the website here with your little DD heart. I am most honored and very grateful.

And I'm very glad it was a tutorial, too, because I think one of the most wonderful things about DA is how the community encourages and supports learning and progressing in art. It's not just a place to showcase what you do - it's a place to connect and learn, and I've gotten more satisfaction through making and posting those tutorials than anything else. I do love making art for people, but there's something more wonderful about helping people make their OWN art. Opening up possibilities, unlocking potential. Anything is possible. Even DD's someday.

Anyway.

A warm welcome to all the new watchers and thanks to everyone who favorited and for the new llamas and everything.  I've been really busy but I'm hoping to get a Foot Tutorial up soon and I've been doing some really exciting work with rhythms that I'd like to get into tutorial format someday, too. So more to come soon, and who knows what else in the future.

Cheers. =)

Hey everybody, the Pencil Kings January Figure Drawing Challenge starts Monday, and you can sign up here: figuredrawingchallenge.com

If you're a PK subscriber, please check the PK Community for signup info!

Really looking forward to seeing how the new exercises work for everyone - lots of great practice plus practical applications for making works of art as you go. So if you want a figure drawing course, you've got that, and if you want a month-long challenge where you create a new piece of art each day, you've got that, too!

I'll be instructing and giving feedback on the FB group and on the DA Group here, so hope to see you there!

Coming in 2015!

Hey everybody! Thanks for the awesome year here at DA. It's really been a trip this year, getting back to basics and falling in love with creating art once again.  I'm so glad the tutorials have been so helpful.  Coming up in the next month (I hope!):

Drawing Clothes - As requested by the winner of my 500 follower giveaway on Tumblr I'll be simplifying clothing and helping to make sense of how it works with the figure underneath.

Drawing Feet - To round out the whole body construction series, I'll explain foot construction and how to get them firmly and naturally on the ground.

Drawing the Back - A special addition to cover the whole back in its entirety, clarifying muscle groups and how to add shading to bring out their forms.

I may eventually revisit and fix up some of the old ones, too, or take requests for more tutorials you'd like to see.

On January 5th Pencil Kings will be offering another month-long Figure Drawing Challenge, which is really more like a mini figure drawing course. I'll be instructing and giving feedback on Facebook and here at the Pencil Kings DA group. More info on signups when I get it!

Looking forward to another great year!

Monday begins Pencil King's Perspective Drawing Challenge - a 4-week course in all the basics of perspective. There's 12 video lessons and daily exercises to help make it all make sense, and I'm coaching the whole darn thing.

You can sign up here for a small fee: www.perspectivedrawingchalleng…

If you've always wanted to learn perspective, this may just do the trick. =)

Up and Coming

I swear to god I'm going to get that hip tutorial out to you guys soon. I'm just absolutely dedicated to figuring out a way to clearly explain the pelvis, which is taking some... patience. And time.

I finished up prepping for the next Pencil Kings Challenge though, five hours worth of Perspective videos that I hope will really help people out.  More info on that when I get it!

Gonna start a YouTube channel to demo some of this stuff soon, too, as soon as I don't have a big bandaid smack between my eyes. =P  Until I get suggestions I'm just going to demo each of my anatomy tutorials, try to make it quick and clear, step-by-step, show how these things are constructed.

Like pelvises. Wtf pelvis, make sense.
